Overview:
Are you unintentionally causing harm to your LGBTQ clients with well-meaning but misguided approaches? Encouraging them to disclose their sexual identity without a nuanced understanding can lead to unintended trauma. I’ve been there—early in my career, I made the mistake of pushing clients to declare their sexual orientation without the proper sensitivity.
In this presentation, Dr. Joe Kort will provide you with the essential tools and current insights necessary for effectively counseling lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning clients, as well as couples, in this ever-evolving landscape. Learn targeted strategies to address the unique challenges your clients might be encountering, including issues of self-acceptance, internalized homophobia, non-heteronormative sexual behaviors, trauma arising from LGBTQ experiences, and the intricate process of coming out.
Additionally, Dr. Kort will guide you to avoid the common pitfall of assuming “a couple is a couple,” emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing distinctions in treating LGBTQ couples versus their heterosexual counterparts. Don’t risk losing LGBTQ clients due to inadequate intake, assessment, and treatment planning. Discover how to create a secure therapeutic space for your clients.
Objectives:
- Assess gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning clients for psychological trauma to assist in informing treatments interventions.
- Discuss at least 3 of the six distinct stages of the coming out process to provide the optimal amount of support to the client.
- Distinguish between mental health disorders that mimic the effects of the trauma from growing up LGBTQ.
Limitations:
This course provides general guidance for working with LGBTQ clients and is not a comprehensive review of all identities or experiences. Clinicians should adapt content to individual client needs and seek further training as needed.
