Overview:
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) comprises a set of therapies including cognitive and
behavioral treatments. They are evidence-based. Effective for a range of mental health
disorders including anxiety, depression, PTSD, behavioral dysregulation and OCD, they
can be applied in clinical treatment, individually and in group format.
This workshop will review the core components of CBT and practical strategies that work
with adolescents. Setting the foundation for work in CBT, we will begin with a discussion
of Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing, Values Assessment, and the process of
tolerating discomfort all boost motivation for change. Case examples will be used
throughout to illustrate principles and strategies. Emphasis will be placed on the clinical
application of CBT and the techniques for generalization and maintenance of change.
Objectives:
- Describe the CBT “diamond”; an expansion of the CBT triangle.
- Discuss motivational components to enhance the CBT process.
- Explain three of the core components of CBT.
- List two techniques for generalization and maintenance of change.

Mary Alvord, Ph. D
Mary K. Alvord, PhD, is a psychologist with more than 40 years of clinical experience and is the founder of Alvord, Baker & Associates. She specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults using evidence-based therapies, primarily Cognitive Behavior Therapies (CBT). Dr. Alvord holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), and Clinical Fellow of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). In 2019, Dr. Alvord was presented with the Promoting Evidence-Based Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents Award by the APA Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. She is the founder of a charitable non-profit, Resilience Across Borders. Dr. Alvord is co-author of Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens, Resilience-Builder Program, and her newest release, The Action Mindset Workbook for Teens: Simple CBT Skills to Help You Conquer Fear and Self-Doubt and Take Steps Toward What Really Matters.
