Overview:
Designed to reorient negative or distorted thought patterns and associated behaviors with an evidence-based approach, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can effectively treat patients with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and various other conditions.
This course will introduce and apply key CBT methodologies, emphasizing motivation-building components such as Motivational Interviewing, Values Assessments, and more, to enhance the model’s ability to stimulate positive change in adolescent populations.
Using real-life scenarios to train patients in the skills they need to create and maintain these key cognitive and behavioral changes, this course will empower therapists and their patients to harness the power of CBT in a highly practical and sustainable manner.
Objectives:
- Explore the connections between thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and body sensations (the “CBT diamond”) to contextualize problems.
- Empower therapists with motivational strategies for improving patient compliance with CBT methodologies.
- Introduce two techniques for generalization and maintenance of positive change.

Mary K. Alvord, PhD, is a psychologist with more than 40 years of clinical experience and is the founder of Alvord, Baker & Associates. She specializes in treating children, adolescents, and adults using evidence-based therapies, primarily Cognitive Behavior Therapies (CBT). Dr. Alvord holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavior Sciences at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), and Clinical Fellow of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). In 2019, Dr. Alvord was presented with the Promoting Evidence-Based Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents Award by the APA Society for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. She is the founder of a charitable non-profit, Resilience Across Borders. Dr. Alvord is co-author of Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens, Resilience-Builder Program, and her newest release, The Action Mindset Workbook for Teens: Simple CBT Skills to Help You Conquer Fear and Self-Doubt and Take Steps Toward What Really Matters.
