Overview:
Chronic pain is an incapacitating medical condition that includes many treatment challenges. Many healthcare providers struggle to adequately support patients living with chronic pain and coexisting conditions such as substance use disorders and other mental health conditions, including trauma disorders, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, sleep disorders, and other psychosocial and psychological problems.
Chronic pain patients have acute treatment needs, and the use of opioid analgesics has contributed to an overreliance on opioids in America, contributing to the opioid epidemic. Treatment outcomes are improved when providers are aware of the obstacles facing patients living with chronic pain and coexisting disorders.
Historically, when individuals struggling with chronic pain and comorbid addictive disorders enrolled in focused chronic pain management programs, they often failed due to under-managed or unmanaged symptoms of substance use disorders or mental health disorders. Additionally, chronic pain patients who go through a typical addiction treatment program may be seen as “drug-seeking/med seeking” and their pain may not be adequately managed, further contributing to treatment failures. This course will educate participants about the factors and underlying problems and obstacles that contribute to the complexity of inappropriately treating individuals with chronic pain disorders.
When working with people suffering from chronic pain it is crucial to be aware of the cultural and family dynamics that could sabotage effective treatment. This workshop addresses these types of obstacles and covers recommended interventions needed for positive treatment outcomes.
Objectives:
- Discuss two or more reasons why the biomedical approach alone may be ineffective for the low-outcome subset of chronic pain patients with coexisting disorders.
- List three or more financial, familial, or societal costs often experienced by patients experiencing chronic pain and coexisting disorders.
- Identify three or more of the most common coexisting disorders chronic pain patients experience.
- List three or more common obstacles facing patients with chronic pain and coexisting disorders.
- Describe two or more common self-defeating reactions people living with chronic pain and coexisting disorders exhibit that may negatively influence treatment outcomes.

Stephen Grinstead
Dr. Stephen Grinstead is a seasoned expert in the field of addiction and chronic pain management, with over 35 years of experience as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), a former California Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC-II), and an Advanced Relapse Prevention Specialist (ACRPS). He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science, a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology, and a Doctorate in Addictive Disorders (Dr. AD), making him one of the few professionals in the world with this unique combination of expertise. Dr. Grinstead has an impressive background as an educator, having taught at several prestigious universities, including Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley Extension, Stanford University Medical School, and the University of Utah's School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies. He also served on the faculty of UC Santa Cruz Extension Alcohol and Drug Studies Program and as an Adjunct Professor at Alliant University, where he taught Masters Level and Psy.D. students the Treating the Addicted Family System course for the Marriage and Family Therapy track for five years. In 2015, Dr. Grinstead co-founded and served as the Chief Clinical Officer of a Residential and Intensive Outpatient Triple Diagnosis Chronic Pain Management Program in Camarillo, California. He is the author of multiple books on chronic pain management, including Thank You Adversity For Yet Another Test: A Body Mind Spirit Approach for Relieving Chronic Pain Suffering, Freedom from Suffering: A Journey of Hope, Managing Pain, Coexisting Disorders, and the Addiction-Free Pain Management® Recovery Guide. Dr. Grinstead is renowned internationally for his pioneering work in preventing relapse related to addiction and chronic pain disorders and for his development of the Addiction-Free Pain Management® System. His extensive experience with chronic pain management, substance use disorders, eating addiction, and coexisting mental and personality disorders make him a valuable resource for patients and practitioners alike.
