Overview:
Going through a painful breakup is a common yet emotionally challenging experience that often brings clients to therapy. In some cases, the end of a romantic relationship can feel so overwhelming that individuals become hyper-focused on their ex, displaying patterns that resemble behavioral addiction. Clients navigating “love-addicted” breakups may report obsessive thoughts, intense emotional distress, cravings for contact, and impulsive or compulsive behaviors that interfere with daily functioning.
For clinicians, conceptualizing these symptoms through an addictive framework can provide a powerful lens for assessment and treatment. In this webinar, Dr. Cortney Warren will explore how romantic love and breakups can mirror addiction-like processes and how these patterns impact clients’ psychological well-being.
Drawing on current research and clinical expertise, this course will introduce cognitive-behavioral tools and strategies to help clients better understand their emotional experience, challenge harmful beliefs, and regain a sense of agency after a breakup.
Objectives:
Identify key characteristics of addictive behaviors and describe how they apply to love addiction.
Describe the clinical symptoms and cognitive distortions commonly observed in love-addicted breakups.
Apply cognitive-behavioral interventions to assess and treat individuals experiencing clinically impairing romantic breakups.
This recorded webinar is delivered through lecture and includes clinical examples, a case vignette, and CBT-based interventions. The course presents psychological and neurobiological concepts of love addiction, along with assessment tools and practical strategies for treatment.
Limitations:
While romantic attachment and post-breakup distress may mirror behavioral addiction in some individuals, “love addiction” is not a formal DSM-5 diagnosis. The conceptualization remains debated in academic and clinical circles. Additionally, individual differences in attachment style, trauma history, and emotional resilience can affect treatment outcomes. Clinicians are encouraged to evaluate client experiences within broader cultural and relational contexts.

Dr. Cortney S. Warren, Ph. D, ABPPDr. Cortney S. Warren is a board-certified clinical psychologist and former tenured associate professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She earned her bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in 2000 and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Texas University in 2006 after completing her clinical internship at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Warren is an expert on addictions, self-deception, eating pathology, and the practice of psychotherapy from a cross-cultural perspective. With almost 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, 7 book chapters, two books, and 75 professional presentations, Dr. Warren’s work appears in some of the field & top journals. She has won some of the most prestigious awards in her field. In addition to publishing in scientific, peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Warren is passionate about bringing theoretically grounded, empirically supported psychological research to the general public. Consequently, Dr. Warren works as a research consultant, keynote speaker, and writes a blog for Psychology Today. In her TEDx talk Honest Liars, and the associated book, Lies We Tell Ourselves: The Psychology of Self-Deception, Dr. Warren describes her view that self-deception is our biggest obstacle to life fulfillment.
