Overview:
Some couples don’t just fight — they damage their relationship almost every time they do. The same arguments. The same escalation. The same aftermath. And you’re left exhausted, wondering if anything you’re doing is actually helping.
This 6-hour training gives you practical, proven strategies for working with high-conflict couples. Learn why some couples turn conflict into a destructive, adversarial battle — and how to transform it into a collaborative process that strengthens the relationship instead of tearing it apart. Understand the architecture of intimacy, the features of healthy vs. unhealthy conflict, and the existential issues (such as fear of vulnerability, powerlessness, desire for meaning) that drive couples to attack each other instead of support each other. You’ll also learn Fair Fighting guidelines, how to work with narratives and “triggering,” and specific clinical skills for the high-conflict couples that leave most therapists burned out.
Designed for licensed mental health professionals who work with couples and want practical strategies that actually work — even with these really difficult cases.
Objectives:
- List features of healthy conflict.
- List and explain the personal skills necessary for couples to engage in healthy conflict.
- Describe the concept of Fair Fighting and how it can lead to positive outcomes.
- Describe how the concept of “narratives” can contribute to productive conflict.
- List existential issues that can drive couples’ conflict.
- List clinical skills that can lead to positive outcomes with high-conflict couples.
