This 6-hour training gives you practical strategies to work confidently with any client from any culture — without needing to become an expert on every background. Learn to use the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview to assess cultural influences on diagnosis, recognize and reduce your own biases, build meaningful rapport across cultural differences, and recover when you’ve made an unintentional cultural misstep. Beyond ethnicity, you’ll also explore issues of age, gender, sexuality, religion, acculturation, and social justice — and strengthen your own cultural self-awareness in the process.

Objectives:
- Implement the DSM-5 criteria and Cultural Formulation Interview to accurately assess for cultural influences as it relates to diagnosis.
- Analyze biases to improve clinical strategies, rapport, and engagement with a variety of clients.
- Develop a deep understanding of the impact of varying cultural group experiences to enhance empathy in session.
- Devise ethical standards for a culturally competent practice related to therapeutic authority and self-disclosure.
- Utilize clinical strategies to address unintentional cultural offenses towards clients to increase treatment effectiveness.
- Â Apply skills to overcome cultural barriers such as language, religion, and different belief systems to improve session outcomes.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This course provides instruction on culturally responsive clinical assessment, rapport-building, bias reduction, and the application of the DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview when working with diverse clients across differences in culture, age, gender, sexuality, religion, language, and belief systems. Content is educational in nature and is intended to support professional development for licensed mental health professionals. This training does not substitute for clinical supervision, consultation, or specialty training required for managing complex, high-risk, or legally sensitive presentations. Participants are responsible for applying course content within their professional scope of practice, licensure regulations, and applicable ethical standards. Completion of this course confers only a certificate of completion and does not provide any independent certification or credential.
