Overview:
Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB) disorders, including Hair Pulling Disorder (also called Trichotillomania) and Skin Picking Disorder (also called Excoriation Disorder), are neither rare nor benign conditions. As many as one in 20 people have engaged in non-cosmetic BFRBs resulting in bodily damage and personal distress. Yet these conditions are often unidentified as legitimate clinical disorders, and those iindividuals have been underserved by the clinical community.Â
In this presentation, Charles Mansueto, Ph. D, will provide an overview of BFRBs, will highlight their treatment and will present recent research findings on BFRBs. The primary focus of the workshop will be to introduce the Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment approach, an evidence-based therapy that is widely used by expert BFRB clinicians. ComB treatment provides a conceptual framework that encompasses and integrates sensory, cognitive, affective, motor and environmental variables into an individualized treatment package geared to the clinical phenomenology of the individual.Â
In this presentation, the unique advantages of ComB treatment over alternative approaches will be highlighted, and case vignettes will illustrate how to implement treatment consistent with the ComB approach and the needs of the client.

- Describe the varieties and defining characteristics of BFRBs as currently understood by expert clinicians and researchers.
- Discuss the importance of the clinical phenomenology of BFRBs as reflected in Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment.
- Explain how the ComB model guides assessment, patient education and clinical decision-making throughout the treatment process
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This webinar explores Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), specifically Trichotillomania and Excoriation Disorder, and introduces the Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) treatment model. ComB is supported by clinical use and peer-reviewed literature, including a recent randomized controlled trial that showed promising outcomes for individuals with Trichotillomania. However, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness across diverse populations and to compare it with other treatments such as Habit Reversal Training (HRT).
This course is intended for licensed mental health professionals and assumes familiarity with behavioral interventions. It reflects current evidence and practice, but it is not a substitute for formal training or supervision.

Charles Mansueto, Ph. D
Dr. Charles Mansueto is the founder and director of the Behavior Therapy Center of Greater Washington, a leading center for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. He has over 40 years of experience in the application of cognitive behavior therapy to a broad range of clinical problems. Dr. Mansueto has written extensively and presented nationally and internationally on OCD and related disorders. He currently serves as a member of the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board of the International Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Foundation, is past president and current board member of OCD Mid-Atlantic, and a founding member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the TLC Foundation for Body- Focused Repetitive Behaviors, where he is Director of Professional Training. Dr. Mansueto created the Comprehensive Behavioral (ComB) model, a widely used treatment approach for BFRBs.
