Tuesday, October 15th
1:30 PM EST – 4:45 PM EST
Overview:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has informed many relapse prevention models using cognitive coping skills and behavioral strategies. Motivational interviewing (MI) is also an evidence-supported approach in the treatment of substance use disorders. Additionally, research indicates that combining MI with CBT may result in improved client outcomes.
This presentation will explore the rationale (and limitations) for integrating MI and CBT into practice. Additionally, examples of how the four processes of MI and associated skills/strategies are integrated using several key relapse prevention exercises will be demonstrated. Familiarity with both MI and CBT is suggested.
Objectives:
- Explain how the goals and purpose of MI and CBT complement each otherÂ
- Implement MI strategies with CBT-based relapse prevention activities to improve clinical practice.
- Describe at least three key components of an MI-CBT integrated session.
Course materials are only available to enrolled students.
