Overview:
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a robust, evidence-based approach that was developed to treat clients with emotion dysregulation and high suicidality. Over the years, this highly effective treatment has been expanded and applied to those with anxiety, depression, and trauma with great success, as well. However, the growing population of neurodivergent (ND) clients seeking care can struggle with standard DBT dissemination and practice, sometimes making things worse.
Practitioners unfamiliar with the variance in needs and presentations of the ND population may feel overwhelmed, misinterpret the client’s behavior as treatment resistance, and inadvertently shut down learning and participation. Research indicates a potential result of care provider fatigue and overall reluctance to work with these courageous and remarkable people.
This seminar will enhance your ability to recognize and accommodate neurodivergence in individual and group settings and to adapt traditional DBT skills to the neurodivergent brain. If you have wanted to expand your practice to include ND clients, or you have been fearful to work with this diverse community, this is the training for you!
Objectives:
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Compare and contrast individual and group DBT approaches and identify at least three methods for adapting DBT skills for neurodivergent populations.
- Examine typical hemispheric brain lateralization biases & vertical blocks in information processing in ND brains as a means to enhance mindfulness practice and improve the client’s ability to engage.
- Describe the neuroscience-informed process of naming emotions to raise awareness of places for volitional behavioral intervention.
- Describe at least one vertical block to somatic awareness and distress tolerance skills.
- Describe Cognitive Structures (ROSE, DEAR MAN, etc.) as a means to demystify interpersonal effectiveness for ND clients.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This training is intended for licensed mental health professionals who work with, or wish to work with, neurodivergent clients in individual and group settings and who use or are learning Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). The content is educational in nature and does not constitute clinical supervision, medical advice, or a substitute for individualized case consultation, and it does not constitute DBT certification, intensive training, or a pathway to certification in DBT. The adaptations presented are intended to supplement, not replace, comprehensive DBT training, fidelity to the standard treatment model, and individualized assessment of each client’s needs. All assessment approaches, adaptations, and interventions discussed should be applied within each participant’s scope of practice, licensure, and applicable jurisdictional regulations, with recognition that the neuroscience-informed frameworks presented are an evolving area of clinical practice and that neurodivergent presentations vary widely between individuals. Because DBT was developed for clients with high suicidality and severe emotion dysregulation, participants should continue to follow standard risk assessment, safety planning, and crisis protocols, and should coordinate with psychiatric, medical, or other providers as needed. Participants should practice in accordance with their profession’s ethical guidelines, mandated reporting obligations, and jurisdiction-specific standards of care.
